Eight freebies and discounts you can claim on Universal Credit in January (worth over £3,400)

1. Household Support Fund – up to £500
Local councils can help with essentials such as food, gas, electricity and water bills through the Household Support Fund. Support varies by area and may be paid as cash, vouchers or bill credits. Some councils automatically issue supermarket vouchers to families whose children receive free school meals. The scheme runs until 31 March 2026 and payments do not affect Universal Credit.
